Live & Learn -- The Name Game

Welcome to another edition of
Live & Learn Thursday!
Life As Always

This week I wanted to share something silly that happened to us over Thanksgiving. Stew's Aunt Arleen showed up for dinner with a super sweet gift for us: the Baby Names Book! Of course the first thing we did was start looking up every single family member's name, starting with the Alway boys.

First was Stew's oldest brother:
Mark -- Latin, derived from Mars, the Roman god of war.

Then his middle brother:
Matthew -- Hebrew, "gift of the lord."

And finally the baby brother:
Stewart -- Old English, "household servant."

OH NO, poor Stewie!! Tee hee.

And then we looked up my name:
Sarah -- Hebrew, "princess."

Well that about sums it up...
The Princess and the Household Servant!

I couldn't believe I had never looked up the meaning of my husband's name before!

Live & Learn!

We'll definitely be careful when choosing our son's name, I think. What does your name mean?

  1. That is HILARIOUS! Did your husband thank his mom for that one?

  2. Hmm.. What baby name book was this because I think that since there are a plethora of baby name books, your names may mean many different things. Like this, in the Urban Dictionary.. the name Jamie means: A girl who is intelligent, yet silly. A girl who is cold on the outside, yet warm and cuddly on the inside. A girl who tell her friends everything, yet she has many secrets hidden. A girl who is a great friend, yet a worthy advesary if you are not a friend of hers. A girl who is extremely sweet and innocent, yet she kicks someone's ass when necessary.
Jamie is awesome. Pretty much every other place I look up my name says that it's another name for James and it means Supplanter (A supplanter takes the place of someone or something that was there first.)

  3. I love looking at name meanings, I always have! My name is derived from Guinevere, and means white and soft, or pure and fair (just 2 of the variations I've seen anyway). Your poor husband!

  4. I'm so excited to hear names you're thinking of using!!! Mine is "from the brook" .. yes, not much meaning, but I've always liked having a nature-y water name. I was thinking I should have a son named River or a daughter named Cove or Lake.. LOL I had the hardest time with boys names so I just let Dustin pick and the choice grew on me and now I can't imagine it any other way! I had about a million awesome girl names picked out though because I was trying to get myself excited about possibly having a girl because I wanted a boy SO BAD! I'm so excited you're going to be in the 'boys club' with me!!!!

  5. Linked up -- thanks that was fun.

I'm excited to hear what you guys choose for a name -- I have a list of about a hundred girl names I loved, but was always stumped when it came to boys names.

    Signed,
Jessica (name meaning = rich...still waiting for monetary riches to come my way)

  7. HAHA! I did know that Sarah means Princess (a name I love, by the way!). My name means "captivating; knotted cord". Clearly, I prefer the captivating part! :)
