Dear Baby Boy,
Well, it's a big week, because we can finally say that we'll get to meet you NEXT MONTH!
We've had a busy week with lots of appointments, but luckily I was able to get some rest over the weekend while Daddy was in Las Vegas. I'm glad that is the last time he'll be far away from us before you are born. Each day I get more and more apprehensive about all the things I need to get done before your arrival, and I'm terrified you'll decide to make your debut prior to your due date and I won't be ready. But like the doctor said, as long as we have diapers, wipes, a place for you to sleep, and a car seat to take you home in, everything else can be dealt with later.
That being said, you should know that your mother is an obsessive planner and a control freak, so this entire experience has been completely new for me. I don't like unknowns and you, my darling, are just that. It's fun though, constantly imagining what you will be like. Who will you look like... what will your voice sound like... what color will your eyes and hair be? It's so fun to imagine...
This week you are the size of a honeydew melon (about 5.5 pounds and 20 inches tall). You won't get much longer, but you'll put on a pound or more of baby fat before birth. Your hearing is totally developed and you respond best to high-pitched noises. I think you like music, because you always start kicking when I'm in the car and am rocking out to the radio. Most of your basic physical development is now complete, and you'll spent the next few weeks just putting on weight. You don't have much room to maneuver anymore so no more somersaults, but you're kicking at about the same rate. I notice your patterns of waking and sleeping, and your new favorite thing seems to be jamming your feet up into my right ribs. Thanks...
My uterus has grown about 1,000 times its original size, but to me it feels more like a million. I've already gained 32 pounds, and I can expect to gain about another half pound a week until you are born, which I can't even fathom. Dragging around all this extra weight is exhausting, and even turning over in bed has become a huge chore. But I'll suffer through it all for you, little buttercup.
My ballooning uterus (which now reaches up under my rib cage) is crowding my internal organs, which has become quite uncomfortable. I'm suffering from heartburn and other gastrointestinal distresses, and of course needing to pee about eighty bazillion times a day and night.
Daddy calls me his little Hobbit now because my feet and ankles are so swollen all the time. I talked to the doctor about it (we see her every week now) but she says my blood pressure is fine and swelling is a natural side effect of the third trimester. However, I've also started seeing an acupuncturist once a week, and she is targeting my kidney function and fluid metabolism to see if we can't get things a bit more under control. I haven't seen any obvious results yet, but I'm willing to keep trying!
I took a "Coping With Confidence" labor prep class last night with Aunt E while Daddy was at work. It was fun for us to do something together, and now I feel even more confident about your upcoming birth day. Try not to hurt me too much though, okay? This weekend Daddy and I plan to conquer a massive to-do list, and maybe spend some quality down time together as well.
Just a few more weeks to go, my precious!
Love Always,
Mommy
