Bookroo Take Two

I am super passionate about helping my children develop a love of reading.

Loving books means that my kids can experience an amazing world of learning and exploration. Books and stories fill a child's mind with knowledge and help develop literacy skills and language development. Reading stimulates imagination and play, curiosity and discussion. Books provide inspiration, thoughts, and reflections. Pictures help readers develop an appreciation for art. A love of reading is a stepping stone to becoming an enthusiastic learner and a confident reader, writer, and speaker. Sitting down with a book also provides us with a time for quiet and calmness in our busy lives.

I first learned about Bookroo when Ryder was only a year old. They believe, as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did, that:

"It is a great thing to start life with a small number of really good books which are your very own."

Bookroo's mission is to enable and empower parents to build their children's book collections in an affordable and exciting way through curated monthly book deliveries. They believe in the power and impact of the written word in the life of a child, and believe it's never too early to start reading to children.

Obviously, I was hooked.

Ryder still absolutely loves books, but he's passed on most of his board books to baby sister Kiley and has moved on to big boy stories. His latest delivery from Bookroo included The Very Fluffy Kitty, Papillon by A. N. Kang and The Spelling Bee Before Recess by Deborah Lee Rose. Since it's the holiday season, their classic adorable wrapping paper had a Christmas theme, and Ryder was especially excited to open up some early presents.

Bookroo is an adorable little subscription service, and a family-run business. Give it a try!

Bookroo

800 million people around the world cannot read or write, and many families (even some schools) have no books for children to read. As an extreme book nerd, this makes me so sad.

Reading is fundamental in today's society. Words (spoken and written) are the building blocks of life. They help us learn new things and develop the imagination.

Passing on my love of reading to Ryder has always been high on our list of priorities. Luckily he hasn't fought us on this at all...

The kid LOVES books.

He searches them out all over the house and carries them to the closest adult begging to be read to. He's definitely my child.

So needless to say, I was thrilled when I learned about Bookroo, a book subscription service for children.

Each month, they deliver an eco-friendly recycled box filled with 2-3 specially selected books.

Their mission is to enable and empower parents and caregivers to build their libraries in an affordable, enjoyable, and stress-free way. They believe in the power of the written word, and that it's never too early to begin reading to a child.

LOVE.

Of course I signed up immediately, and Ryder and I were so excited to receive our very first Bookroo package.

Opening it was so much fun!

This is such an adorable little subscription service, and a family-run business that I'm happy to support. I encourage you to give it a try! Bookroo boxes make wonderful individual or even group baby shower gifts, and are a great way to give someone a monthly reminder of your love.
to receive 20% off your first month's subscription!

It's Ryderoo approved, and we're sure you won't be disappointed!

Live & Learn -- Diaper Pails

I apologize, but today's Live & Learn lesson isn't going to be very entertaining to those of you who aren't new parents. But I gotta be real about my new lifestyle, and the activities and decisions that now consume my days.

A little while back Stew and I were at Babies R Us trying to choose a diaper pail. Yes, our weekends used to consist of ski trips and drunken shenanigans. Now they include shopping for poop receptacles. WHO ARE WE??

Anyhow, I thought I might as well share what we learned.

We were given the Arm & Hammer Diaper Pail as a shower gift, but since it wasn't what I remembered registering for, I decided to take it in and possibly exchange it. I knew we didn't want a Diaper Genie because I had heard the custom bag refills were expensive, so we crossed that one off the list right away. Stew and I played with the rest of the diaper pails for a while and ultimately decided that we liked the Diaper Dekor, because it seemed easy to use and the refill bags weren't that expensive. We took it to the baby customer service section for some advice to validate our decision.

Every once in a while I encounter a really awesome, honest sales person, and this happened to be one of those days. The two women at the counter looked around conspiratorially and then proceeded to tell us that not only was the Safety 1st Easy Saver Diaper Pail the least expensive one out there, but it is also the best. It takes regular trash bags so you don't have to buy or specialty order them. They also admitted that the bags for the Diaper Dekor often go out of stock and don't come back for weeks... not a good situation when you're going through 10-14 diapers a day.

Ironically, the Safety 1st was the original diaper pail I had registered for, at the recommendation of a friend. It wasn't in stock at the store that day, so I ordered it online and it came in just a couple days. So now we're all set in the dirty diaper department.

That being said, I've also heard great things about the Baby Trend Diaper Champ, which also takes regular diaper bags and is pretty affordable.

Here is the most important lesson we learned that day:

Don't rely on price points or advertisements when shopping for a diaper pail. Personal recommendations are the way to go, and the most expensive option isn't always the best one.
