A little multiplication goes a long way

Have I ever mentioned that I can't do math? Like I'm really terrible. Stew has been trying to teach me for years how to calculate a tip at a restaurant, but I mean honestly, why? There's an app for that.

We've been working on finishing up the downstairs living room, and I was super excited about the area rug I ordered a while back. I loved the look of the one in the model home, which I wrote down was 8x11... and apparently I thought that if I ordered a rug that was 11x15, it would be sorta the same size... Or maybe I just accidentally ordered the wrong rug... But I swear I remember being in the living room with a measuring tape, figuring it all out. Anyways...

An absolutely ginormous package arrived on our doorstep last week; it was so heavy I couldn't even get it through the front door by myself. It took both me and Stew to wrastle the rug out of the packaging and unfold it. It was huge, you guys. Like so, so big. It covered the entire living room floor and even extended beyond the couches and into the dining room. So not the look I was going for...

I have no idea why we're having so much trouble with the furnishings for this room. But it was immediately obvious that the rug had to go back... it just wasn't going to work. Note to self: 11x15 is not just "slightly larger" than 8x11, like I must have thought in my head.

Our new, much smaller area rug should be arriving this week (at least if I did the calculations correctly). Because we sure as heck don't want to cover up so much of those gorgeous hardwoods we paid so much extra for!

But now we are so close to getting this room done... I'll be sure to post some pictures of the final result!

  1. Ahh don't get me started on math. It's the only subject I could never handle in high school or college. Hate it! And try to never use it. Haha

  2. I'm great at maths generally but terrible at measurements. It's become a bit of a joke in our household when a parcel arrives and I say "I thought it was bigger!" Like the 1950s sugar cannister I bought on ebay for about $30 - it turned out to be about 8cm square. Or the handbag made from retro materials that can barely fit my wallet. At least you can return yours!

    1. Oh man, stuff like that happens to me all the time! Ordering online can be hard though, a lot of stuff never ends up looking the same in person.

  3. Rugs are so hard to figure out. You really have to find just the right size for the space otherwise it just looks silly. Good luck on your quest for the perfect rug! I love how the room is coming together, looks great!

  4. I hate math! I always, always say, "I don't do numbers." As a communications/PR/writing person... I like words. Words are my thing. Numbers, not soooo much. The room looks great though. You'll get there!

  6. Oh! Btw, i needed one math to get my art degree and u got a d! I was excited!! Lol I always just double the tax for a tip, tax here is 10 percent so that'd be 20 per tip, it was hard living in Oregon bc there's no sakes tax!

    1. I can't remember exactly what kind of floor it is but it's real pre-finished hardwood. Let me know if you'd like to know specifically and I can try to dig up the info for you. :-)
